Why a rug shop, not a carpet truck
We hear it on nearly every visit around Davie. A truck is already booked to do the tile and the wood floors, and the good rug anchoring the room seems like it could tag along on the same appointment.
The trouble is that a stretched-down carpet and a hand-knotted rug are built for opposite treatment. Carpet is fixed to the slab and meant to be scrubbed where it lies. A fine rug is a free-standing textile — wool or silk pile tied to a cotton foundation, colored with dyes that were never made to bake under a hot extraction wand.
Clean a good rug in place and three things quietly go wrong: the fine grit that Davie’s sandy lots and horse trails track indoors stays locked in the base, the dyes can start to creep, and the rug dries slowly against your cool tile. In our inland summer humidity, that slow, uneven drying is exactly how browning and a musty smell take hold.
A rug that carries a whole room deserves a real bath, not a quick pass with a wand.
So we do it the older, slower way in our own plant: measured, tested, dusted, washed with a natural pH shampoo, and speed-dried in a controlled room. Wool, silk, antique, Navajo, shag — the whole process is laid out step by step.

Wool, silk & everything hand-knotted
Every fiber and every dye wants its own handling — which is exactly why testing comes first. Whatever kind you own from the list below, it moves through the same in-plant routine: measured, checked for pH and colorfastness, deep-dusted, washed, and speed-dried.
Hand-knotted Orientals are textiles, not carpet. They earn a full bath in the plant — never a hot wand dragged over them on the lanai.

A machine-made 8×10 in good shape is a straightforward wash. The same size hand-knotted rug with unstable dyes, years of buried grit and a pet accident in one corner is another job entirely.
What moves the price: the measured size, the fiber and how it’s built, dye stability, how much soil is buried in it, any pet contamination, and whether the fringe or edges need work.
So the inspection comes first and the quote second — one number, settled before we begin.

We arrive at your door, wrap the rug, and return it clean when the work is done.
A hand-knotted rug is a loose textile, not carpet tacked to the floor. Cleaning it in place under a hot wand drives grit deeper into the foundation, risks the dyes bleeding, and leaves it drying slowly on your tile — which in Davie’s inland humidity is how browning and a musty edge start. It belongs flat in a wash pit, rinsed until the water runs clear.
We test before we wash. Every rug gets a pre-inspection with a pH reading and a dye-stability check, because some older vegetable-dyed rugs will bleed if they meet water the wrong way. If yours is a bleed risk, we adjust the method — and we show you what we found before a single drop touches it.
We price after we inspect, never before. Size, fiber, construction, dye stability, how much grit is buried in the pile, pet contamination and any repairs all change what a rug needs, so a phone number would only be a guess. When we collect the rug we examine it and give you the exact price before any cleaning begins.
Usually, yes. Urine dries down into alkaline salts lodged deep in the foundation, and dabbing at the surface never reaches them — so we soak and flush the entire rug to dissolve them out. Old or repeated accidents can dig in hard, and at inspection we give you an honest read on what’s realistically achievable before you commit to a thing. More on pet odor removal.
Yes, and it is all done by hand at our own shop, never shipped out. That covers fringe repair and replacement, side and edge overcasting, hole repair and reweaving, moth damage, dry rot, resizing and full restoration. If a repair would cost more than the rug is worth, we say so plainly instead of selling it to you.
Most rugs come back in roughly a week. After washing comes controlled speed-drying in a room where temperature and humidity are held steady — that is what stops the colors from bleeding into one another, so it isn’t a step we hurry. Rugs that also need hand repairs run a bit longer, and you get an honest timeline at the inspection.
